We all love Billy Wilder for all of his Oscar-winning films (he is one of the winningest directors of all time, you know!) but what about the films that don’t get so much attention? Today at Oscar Match, we’re going to pay tribute to the top five films of Billy Wilder that have never won an Oscar!
1. Ace in the Hole:
Starring the irresistible Kirk Douglas in what is probably his best role of his career, Ace in the Hole (also known as The Big Circus) is a taut, pitch-black commentary on the newspaper business. This movie wasn’t really popular when it first came out (some people called it too cynical), but since then it has really caught the critic’s eyes!
2. Five Graves to Cairo
A movie with more twists and turns than a fun house maze, Five Graves to Cairo tells the story of an English WWII tank man who finds himself behind enemy lines when Nazis invade a hotel stuck in the middle of the desert! You should watch this film because it is the inspiration for both Indiana Jones and Inglorious Basterds!
3. One, Two, Three
Starring James Cagny, this film is a laugh-a-minute masterpiece that really never lets down until the final fadeout! Watch it today!
4. The Fortune Cookie
You can’t miss the first film to pair that immortal comedy due Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau! If you love films about insurance scams (and who doesn’t?) this is the type of movie that you just don’t want to miss!
5. A Foreign Affair
Like all of Billy Wilder’s films, this one is about people fucking each other behind their partner’s backs. If any film has the Lubitch touch that Wilder so admired…it’s this one!
